1. Early Beginnings

Cristela Alonzo was born as the last child of her parents on the 6th of January 1979 in San Juan. Her mother, Natalia worked so hard doing two different shifts in a Mexican restaurant in order to support her husband, Adalberto Alonzo who was nonchalant with the affairs of his family. Natalia couldn’t bear the pain anymore and left Adalberto when Cristela was still in the womb. As a result of this, the Comedian only had her father’s name as the memories of him until his death in 2009.

She was raised in San Juan with her three siblings, Julisa Maria Alonzo- a sister, Eloy Eduardo Alonz, and Ruben G Alonzo, her brothers. Throughout her growing, Cristela spent most of her time with her grannie in Reynosa. Things were quite tough for the family as they were as poor as church rats during those days. As a result of this, she went hungry on so many nights and also suffered from malnutrition leading to a disorder in her skin pigmentation.

The Alonzo’s practiced Catholicism and the comedian was raised as one. She had the tendencies of being a tomboy as she spent most of her spare time with her brothers reading several comic books, playing cards and doing metal music.

Sadly, Natalia didn’t live long, she passed on sometime in the year 2002.

Cristela was a bookworm, she schooled and graduated from the Pharr San Juan Alamo High School and later went to Webster University with the intentions of bagging a degree in Theatre. A year after her mom died, Cristela decided to take up a job as an office manager at Addison Improv. While at the Improv, she poured the pain she felt about her mother’s demise in performing stand up comedy. She did well with her small crew in Dallas Scene before moving to Los Angeles in order to grow her career. Cristela enjoyed some fame performing at college comedy shows.

Despite all these, she still struggled with her career but later got a spot at the Comedy Central’s show, The Half Hour (2013).
