Trey Parker is a multi-faceted American entertainer. The actor, animator, writer, director, producer, singer, and songwriter was born as Randolph Severn Parker III on October 19, 1969, in Conifer, Colorado, where he also grew up with his older sister named Shelly Parker. His father, Randolph “Randy” Parker, was a geologist while his mother, Sharon, was an insurance saleswoman.
Parker developed an interest in making films and music from the time he was a child and from the time he was 14, he and his friends started making short films over the weekends using a video camera his father bought for him. This continued until he graduated from high school in 1988.
As a fourteen-year-old high school student, he picked interest in musical theatre and consequently, joined Evergreen Players, a community theatre group popular for its choir program. He performed his first role as a chorus member in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Flower Drum Song and also designed sets for the theatre’s production of Little Shop of Horrors.
In school, he was the pianist for the chorus and also president of the choir counsel and as a result of his position coupled with his membership in Evergreen, Trey Parker became very popular in high school. He took the lead roles most of the time in school plays and was also prom king.
Having picked interest in doing comedy-centered songs at the age of 17, Parker alongside a friend, wrote and recorded a full-length comedy album titled Immature: A Collection of Love Ballads For The ’80’s Man.
By the time he graduated from high school, the talented animator enrolled in Berklee College of Music and spent one semester there before he moved over to the University of Colorado at Boulder. There, he met Matt Stone, his creative partner, during a film class in which students were required to collaborate on projects. Later, they wrote and acted many short films together and starred in a 1993 feature-length musical titled Cannibal! The Musical . The two friends have been together ever since.
They relocated to Los Angeles and wrote their second film, Orgazmo (1997). Before then, their adult animated sitcom South Park premiered on Comedy Central in August 1997. The pair has also produced music and video games based on the show and subsequently made a feature film titled South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999). Besides that, Trey together with Stone has also produced many feature films and television series such as Team America: World Police (2004).
In 2011, The Book of Mormon , a musical co-written by Parker, Stone, and composer Robert Lopez, debuted on the Broadway and recorded huge commercial success and critical acclaim.
Following his works in the entertainment industry, Trey Parker has received several awards, including an Annie Award, a Chicago Film Critics Association Award, five Primetime Emmy Awards for South Park , four Tony Awards, and one Grammy Award for The Book of Mormon . Speaking in an interview published in UK’s The Guardian while promoting their hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, Trey Parker revealed that he supports gay marriage among other things. This does not mean that he is gay. He has dated many ladies and his first relationship on record was with Liane Adamo back in 1988. After they called it quits in 1992, Trey briefly got involved with Toddy Walters in 1993 and later, Lisa Faulkner between 2000 to 2001. He also dated Nichole Galicia in 2003.
Trey has been married twice. His first marriage was to a Japanese Socialite named Emma Sugiyama and the ceremony was officiated by Norman Lear who produced sitcom in the 1970s. Unfortunately, the marriage lasted only two years, ending in divorce in 2008.
