Nigahiga – Biography
June 6, 1990, saw the birth of Ryan Higa in Hilo, Hawai, United States. Though he was born in the US, he is of Japanese descent. As a skillful and talented chap, he got trained and competed in judo and earned a black belt.
He attended Waiakea High School where he participated in judo He also successfully created his first YouTube channel together with Sean Fujiyoshi, Tim Enos and Tarynn Nago. The channel titled Nigahia was launched on July 20, 2016, while he graduated from high school in 2008.
Talking about the origin of his moniker Nigahiga, he stated that Niga means “rant” in Japanese, he prefixed Niga to his name Higa which brought about the coined name Nigahiga.
How Higa turned out a YouTuber outside Nuclear Medicine he was set to study in the University of Nevada is still puzzling to many of his followers. With accolades he received from the first set of videos uploaded on his channels, coupled with encouraging subscriptions, he dropped out to major in Film after the first semester in the University.
After launching his YouTube channel created alongside his crew in 2006, he and Sean Fujiyoshi began posting videos of themselves lip-syncing to songs, they later added some comic materials in their content. On December 25, 2008, two of their then popular videos titled How To Be Gangster and How To Be Emo were removed from their channels due to copyright violations.
His account got suspended temporarily on January 21 and was mandated to remove all the copyright materials therein. As a result, Higa began to compose the music himself. The two videos, How To Be Gangster and How To Be Emo were returned to his channel in August of 2009 and removed again a few days later along with others.
Nigahiga later began his solo career and featured other YouTubers in some of his videos. In 2012, he came up with a production team known as Ryan Higa Production Company (RHPC) which has on board – his good friend Sean Fujiyoshi. They have produced good contents which they have also starred in. In 2016, Higa, alongside his YouTube counterparts, created K-pop group Boys Generally Asian, but Higa left the group in 2018 to seek other interests.
Nigahiga created another channel in 2011 with the name HigaTV where he uploads video blogs and behind the scenes of his major video works. The channel currently boasts of 5 million subscribers.
As an actor, Nigahiga worked with Richard Van Vleet, to produce Ryan and Sean’s Not So Excellent Adventure which was released on November 14, 2008, it featured Higa and Sean as seen in the title.
